Next month Taiwan Adventures are organising a group hike to Snow Mountain, Taiwan’s second highest mountain. We’ve already ran trips to Nenggao, Jialuo Lake and Songluo Lake and this will be our first group trip to the Sheipa National Park. If you’re interesting in joining us, please sign up at our facebook page.
The plan is to leave Taipei on Friday 25th November at 7pm and return on Sunday 27th November 7pm. The trip involves spending 2 nights in cabins on the mountainside. Total cost for the trip is $4500NT and this includes transport, permits, insurance, food and guiding. The trip is limited to 10 people so please sign up ASAP!
Itinerary
Friday – Meet 7pm, drive to Wuling Farm and then hike at night for an hour to arrive at the Qika Cabin.
Saturday – Up around 8am, breakfast and then hike up to the 369 Cabin passing by Snow Mountain’s East Peak. Sleep at the cabin.
Sunday – Up sharp (2/3am) and head to the main peak for sunrise. Hike back down to Wuling Farm and then drive back to Taipei. We expect to be back around 7pm.
Equipment
You will need;
– At least a 40L backpack
– Pack cover
– Sturdy hiking shoes or boots (Sneakers won’t cut it on this one)
– Fleece
– Raincoat
– Warm pants
– 3 pairs of socks
– Warm hat
– Gloves
– Sleeping bag (winter bag – it will be very cold at night, possibly below zero)
– Rain gear
– 2L of water
– Flashlight (preferably a headlamp)
– Toiletries and personal items
– Sunscreen
If you have trouble getting anything, let us know and we’ll see if we can help you out. We’ll provide all the food with the exception of lunch on Saturday.
Notes
It’s important to note that although hiking Snow Mountain doesn’t involve any technical climbing, any high mountain hike where you are carrying your own gear is tough. Please consider your fitness and ability before signing up.
We will require a deposit of $1000NT from anyone who wishes to come. This is non-refundable unless we are forced to cancel because of the weather.
We must receive the deposit before 25th October otherwise it will be too late to apply for the permit.
Hi,
I’ve just completed the Snow Mountain Hike. Its Awesome. Although I have been over 5000m in the past, I found that the altitude gain slowed me down a lot on this hike. Not sure of the reason, but i had too much gear (eg a tent when not needed), so carrying extra weight on a hike that is mainly uphill all the way. After spending a night at 369 cabin, I was more acclimatised. Not sure if this helps but maybe would recommend eating foods high in iron before-hand so extra red blood cells can be made by the body quickly.
Enjoy,
Dean
Gorgeous photos!
Thanks!
my wife and I – both adventurous experienced hikers from the rockies – are looking for a group trip sometime in January. Never done a group trip before, always head out on our own, but the idea of meeting new folks and possibly putting names to faces we see along the myriad trails (!!) is enticing.
Keep up the great work….

Hi! I am coming to Taiwan to visit family from 1/20-2/20 and MUST climb Snow Mountain. I’d love to join up with others to do it as my family isn’t into strenuous stuff at all. I also do not have FB, can you email me?
Sent you an email
Is the event for January still available?
Your photos are amazing!!!
If you can get your details to me today before 10pm, I can try to get you the permit.
Hi Stu,
Some friends of mine would like to climb Snow Mountain this April 5-10. Do you offer any fully-guided tour services or permit application services for an exclusive group hike?
Sending you an email now.
Stu
Hi,
My friends and i are thinking of climbing this mountain in late june.
Do u have any quotations and packages for me to work with?
Hi,
I’ve sent you an email.
Thanks!
Hi Stu,
Are you still running this tour? Hope to hear from you.
Hi
Yes we are. You can see our upcoming events here
http://www.taiwan-adventures.com/trips-and-tours/upcoming-events-2/
Stu
Checked out the website. Don’t see any upcoming tours for Jade Mountain though.
Any chance you guys might do it again in October? 😀
Hi
We might. We’re just trying to come up with a new schedule to include a hike to Yushan.
Stu
Okay. I hope the new schedule will fit into my travel plans 🙂
Hi Stu! I’m not sure if this is too outdated a post but just giving it a shot. I am thinking of doing a DIY hike to snow mountain in the first week of December. Do you think we’ll need any special gear- crampons/ice axes? Any idea what the weather will be like? Thanks!
In all likelihood there’ll be snow season restrictions on the mountain in December. You’ll need to photo of you on a major peak in winter or a snow season training certificate. There’s a load of gear that you’ll need to take too, including ice-axes, 8 point or above crampons, harness, helmet, snow goggles, caribiner, 8 ring, main rope and pull rope.
If you’re interested, Taiwan Adventures have certified guides and they put together a winter ascent of Snow Mountain for you.
Stu
Ah okay thanks for helping us to understand that. I’ve submitted an enquiry via the form on the Taiwan adventure website.. Guess I’ll just wait for the reply!
