River Tracing in Taiwan
Places to go
There are a number of great spots around the Taipei for river tracing or canyoning as its more commonly called. If you’re interested in a guided trip to any of these spots, contact Taiwan Adventures for more info.
Jia Jiu Liao – 加九寮 A relatively easy trace near Wulai. Good for public transport and the waterslide at the end is incredible!
Touqian – 頭前溪 More challenge and involves climbing up three waterfalls. In Yangmingshan, near Wanli
Wanli If you want to go to this one, send me an email and try to explain how to get there.
Golden Grotto – A great trace in Hualien (the link is to Neil Wade’s blog)
Hey,
Great site!
I want to climb a mountain in early summer.
I live in Hsinchu, can you suggest some cool mountains to climb (Taichung, Taipei, east coast) (1-2 days maybe)
Also, do you know where i can get a list of mountains and where and how to get to them? Chinese is not my forte haha!
I’m searching but need to know more..
kind regards,
Matt
If you live near Hsinchu some good places to go are Wainiaozuishan, Tapung Fort or the Syaroko trail.
I wish there was a list of places to go to in English! Looking people’s blogs is your best bet or you could try joining a Taiwanese hiking group. Bound to be some your way.
Hey just thought I went river tracing with this company and they were really well organized and safe.

I went to Wulai the other week, and we had a great experience with White Squall (http://wsas.emmm.tw/) – not the cheapest, but the profits go to helping disadvantaged teenagers.

Hi Stu
The link to your page on river tracing in Touqian doesn’t seem to be working – I just went river tracing in Wuali yesterday and it would be good to get directions to other places.
Thanks
Chris
Hi Chris,
Thanks for letting me know. Should be fixed now.

[…] Water tracing is pretty specific name for hiking up a river in Taiwan. It is the only place I’ve heard with a specific name for hiking up a river. There are canyoneering and caving, but those are more technical. Here is a quick write up on river tracing from Hiking Taiwan. […]
