The tea growing area of Maokong makes for a great place to cycle. Plenty of hills and different routes, loads of cafes and tea houses with awesome views and there’s really not that much traffic, at least not during the week!
You can get to there with the minimum of city cycling by sticking to the riverside park. For my favourite route, I cross over at the Hengguang Bridge 恆光橋 and follow Lane 45, Laoquan Street 老泉街45巷 all the way to the top. From there I pass the cable car station and all of the tea houses and then head down the Zhinan Road 指南路 and back into the riverside park by Zhengda University 政大.
For a nice side trip, look out for the sign for the Zhinan Temple 指南宮 on the way down. It’s not too far and the temple is beautiful and has some great views.
I need to keep this post short as I’m working on project at the moment and that’s taking up most of my time so here’s some photos from the last time I went up Maokong.

I find it strange to see cable cars in Taiwan. But these are not for skiers I presume. Wonderful photos by the way. Makes me miss Taiwan even more.
Thanks, yeah it’s just for tourists, very popular as well.
lovely photos! this post made me want to go cycling at maokong this weekend. Do you know if there are any bicycle rentals there?
Sorry, I don’t know of any! There might be some at the zoo. You can definietly rent bikes at Gongguan by the Yongfu Bridge and ride over from there. It’s about 6/7km.
HI
Sorry I don’t know of any. I would imagine that you can rent bikes by the zoo but i don’t know for certain. You could always rent a bike at Gongguan by the Yongfu Bridge and then ride over from there. It’s about 6/7km.
